The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

From introduction: The Greater Yellowstone Area (GYA) fires of 1988 were, in the words of National Park Service (NPS) publications, the most significant ecological event in the history of the national parks (NPS 1988). Their political consequences may be as far-reaching as their…

Forest fire danger rating research in Canada was initiated by the federal government in 1925. Five different fire danger rating systems have been developed since that time, each with increasing universal applicability across Canada. The approach has been to build on previous…

The recent fire history of northern Quebec biomes (54 000 km2), including the northern Boreal Forest, the southern and northern Forest—Tundra, and the Shrub Tundra, was documented by examining size and dates of 20th century wildfires using tree ring techniques. Results showed…

Variations of fuel moisture and related parameters attributable to degree of slope were studied by establishing fire weather stations on six land surfaces of the same elevation and aspect but varying from 0 to 62 per cent in steepness. Mean maximum daily temperature was found to…

Controlling wildfires within the wildland/urban interface has proven to be the most complex challenge facing wildland fire agencies. Although program improvements to increase the efficiency of interface suppression efforts have been suggested, the availability of information…

Wet and dry bulb temperatures from ventilated and non-ventilated screens can be used to obtain realistic values of relative humidity provided the appropriate psychometric coefficient is used. However, relative humidity from non-ventilated screens are subject to significant error…

Mass fires are being investigated through a series of large-scale test fires. Preliminary results indicate: (a) air flow patterns that create eddies can result in fire vortices when fires is present; (b) the lower part of the convection column consists of a series of small…

An understanding of fire spread is important to the development of improved methods and systems for the control of free burning fires. Gaining knowledge about fire spread in forest fuels is complex because many variables are involved and because we still lack full understanding…

Ignition of wildland fine fuels by lightning was simulated with an electric arc discharge in the laboratory. The results showed that fuel parameters such as depth, moisture content, bulk density, and mineral content can be combined with the duration of the simulated continuing…

Moisture contents of organic forest-floor materials were studied by strata in a semi-mature jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) stand in relation to their within-stand locations and changes in both duff moisture code and fine fuel moisture code, the two weather-based components of…

Mass fires are likely to spread rapidly and burn intensely when strong winds are combined with low humidities and high temperatures, particularly after a rainless period. To identify synoptic weather types that create such periods of critical fire weather, the 48 contiguous…

INTRODUCTION: Fire in the interior basin of Alaska is commonplace. Lightning- and man-caused fires have burned and reburned millions of acres. Despite their commonness and extensiveness, the specific history and characteristics of a fire as the relate to fules and weather have…
