The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Multiple nuclear weapon bursts in an urban area could lead to separate large area fires. If sufficiently far apart, each fire burns independently and little, if any, fire spread is expected. For small separations, the flow fields generated by each fire can interact and fire…

The occurrence of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in the combustion products of carbonaceous fuels is a well known phenomenon. Several PAW are known to be carcinogenic in animals. Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is the most well-known and studied compound of those classified by the…

A numerical index that estimates the atmosphere's capacity to disperse smoke from prescribed burning is described. The physical assumptions and mathematical development of the index are given in detail. A preliminary interpretation of dispersion index values is offered. A…

ANNOTATION: The principal focus of biomass harvesting in the past has been the use of chipping systems to reduce a wide variety of woody materials down to small pieces for easier handling and transporting. However, chipping systems have several short comings that limit their…

Since its introduction in 1979, CHEAPO, a computer based economic analysis program, has allowed users of the Stand Prognosis Model to evaluate silvicultural alternatives from an economic point of view. Subsequent modifications to the Prognosis Model have rendered CHEAP0 obsolete…

Differences between Prognosis Model versions 4.0 and 5.0 are described. Additions to version 5.0 include an event monitor that schedules activities contingent on stand characteristics, a regeneration establishment model that predicts the structure of the regeneration stand…

Predictions of wildland fire behavior are used in various aspects of fire management: prescribed fire planning, presuppression planning, real-time fire suppression activities. Methods for calculating fire behavior covered here represent continued improvement of the packaging of…

The slash (I) fuel model of the 1972 National Fire Danger Rating System was evaluated for homogeneity within the model and for differences from other fuel models. Clearcut slash is different from partial cut slash at the 1-percent level of confidence. Pacific Northwest clearcut…

Data from three separate but related surveys address the linkages between recreation and public perception of attitudes toward fire management. Recreation ranks high among alternative forest resource uses and is a serious concern vis-a-vis fire effects. Public acceptance of new…

An evolving understanding of ecological processes, together with ambiguities in National Park Service policy, have led to multiple interpretations of the role of management in our large natural area National Parks. National Park Service management policies must be dynamic and…

Recently, a method for determining moisture in soil using a microwave oven was described by Miller, Smith, and Biggar (1974). This procedure requires special beakers and, in some cases, long times for heating. We describe here a simplified method for soil moisture determination…

Dwarf mistletoes are markedly host specific, perennial, obligate parasites. The success of mistletoe populations is tied not only to the suitability of the environment, but also to the availability and conditions of the hosts they infect. Thus, the dynamics of forest stand…

Broadcast burning following harvesting of flood plain sites in Alaska substantially decreased residual organic material and increased exposed mineral soil. Two forest types were studied: white spruce/alder/feathermoss and white spruce/alder/lingenberry/feathermoss. The latter…
