The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Large stand-replacing fires at intervals of 50 to 500 years were responsible for the vegetation patterns of parks and wilderness areas in the Boreal, Great Lakes-Acadian, Rocky Mountain, and Douglas-fir regions. Fire recurrence is closely linked to stand age in some ecosystems.…

Created through the Wildfire Disaster Recovery Act of 1989 (PL 101-286), in response to the destructive western fire season of 1987 and the Yellowstone fires of 1988, the Commission was asked to consider the environmental and economic effects of disastrous wildfires through…

Results and analysis of an experimental burning study on the fire behavior in boreal mixedwood slash in the northern Ontario's Clay Belt Region are presented. Horizontal discontinuity in this fuel type makes fire spread difficult when the fire danger rating is low to moderate.…

This paper describes a system for preparing monthly outlooks for fire-weather elements in the United States. The system is based on multiple regression equations that specify monthly mean anomalies of precipitation, temperature, dewpoint, and wind speed from concurrent anomalies…

Representative soundings from 74 major wildland fires in the United States were analyzed to determine if characteristic temperature, moisture, and wind patterns were discernable prior to the occurrence of extreme fire behavior. In a previous study, OO UTC soundings were used to…

Objectives of this study were to test existing prediction equations for duff depth reduction, percentage of duff consumed, and mineral soil exposure to determine the limits of their applicability, and to develop if possible broadly based prediction equations for use throughout…

Updating the National Fire-Danger Rating System (NFDRS) was completed in 1977, and operational use of it was begun the next year. The System provides a guide to wildfire control and suppression by its indexes that measure the relative potential of initiating fires. Such fires do…

The 1988 Yellowstone fires provided a unique opportunity to examine how the geometry of fire created patches affects plant reestablishment. We initiated studies in 1990 in small (1 ha), moderate (74-200 ha), and large (480-3968 ha) crown-fire patches in each of 3 areas.…

'Burning earlier in the season may reduce the need for pre-burn vegetation management treatments (e.g. herbicide application) on some sites...Burning in late spring to take advantage of low green-up levels may result in greater rates of fire spread and allow for reduced…
