The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

This report is a bibliography of publications on all aspects of forest fire produced during the period 1961 to 1974 at the Petawawa Forest Experiment Station. There are 52 items, listed chronologically in four categories. A short descriptive note accompanies each item.

A fuel hazard rating system was devised for eastern logging slash similar to that of the National Fire Danger Rating System. It involves a series of CALCOMP plots that graphically display normalized predictions of rate of spread and fireline intensity as related to slash species…

The efficiency of aerial fire detection patrolling could be significantly improved if a reliable thunderstorm tracking and lighting fire prediction scheme were available. One method to determine the areas over which thunderstorms have passed requires the use of expensive…

Kiil, Silversides
An inexpensive and simple technique for measuring the average wind velocity in the lower 600 m of the atmosphere is proposed. The technique uses 30-g pilot balloons filled with helium. Final position of the balloon is measured by a clinometer and a compass--instruments which are…

Discusses various practical measures to prevent the spread of fire on forest peat bogs already drained or to be drained. These measures include reduction of the depth or frequency of the drains; the use of sluice-gates to regulate the flow; and the creation of 'dams' across the…

Byram, Nelson
Buoyancy production rates for a pure heat source and for a fire heat source of burning woody fuels show that fire may be regarded as pure source yielding heated air rather than heated combustion products.

The data necessary for fire simulation may be made available through an algorithm based on tracing of boundaries composed of straight-line segments. Useful assumptions are that if a closed boundary does not contain a given point, then any other closed boundary contained within…

Increasing expenditures for forest fire retardant and the development of more efficient delivery systems have emphasized the need for more knowledge on the transmission and retention characteristics of wildland fuels. In a series of tests, retardant was cascaded from an airplane…

[From the text] Fire has been an integral part of America's wildlands for millions of years. The only environments not experiencing fire as a significant ecological factor were those that remained very cold, very wet, or very dry, and even in these regions, extreme variation in…

The Very High Resolution Radiometer of NOAA-2 and -3 can successfully locate and identify thunderstorms. Since lightning fires account for more than 90 percent of the acreage burned by forest fires in Alaska, this imagery promises to be a useful tool for forest fire control.…
