The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

'Although the cup anemometer, widely used in forest meteorology, has certain faults (Middleton and Spilhaus, 1953: `Meteorological Instruments', Univ. of Toronto Press), its basic properties such as simplicity of design, ease of fabrication, ruggedness, good sensitivity and…

'We have read the recent review article 'Primary and Secondary Particulates as Pollutants' by P. F. Fennelly with considerable interest, but yet, concern. Our interest is based on an awareness of the need to examine particulate pollution in terms of particle size and chemical…

The principle of operation of a wideband crossed loop magnetic-field direction finder is studied by comparing the bearing determined from the NS and EW magnetic fields at various times up to 155 mu-s after return stroke initiation with the TV-determined lightning channel base…

At the request of the World Meteorological Organization, a hierarchical system for rating forest fire danger was developed. The system uses generally available meteorological measurements to evaluate the flammability of wildland fuels anywhere in the world. The basic framework…

Mass divergence influences on plume dispersion modify classic Gaussian calculations by as much as a factor of two in complex terrain. The Gaussian plume was derived in flux form to include this process.

In summary, there are some individuals who see prescribed fire, especially wilderness fires, as a threat to the fire prevention program. Others are equally frustrated because they feel the simplistic message of Smokey is in opposition to, or makes it more difficult to achieve,…

The results of a 9-year rotational burning study on blueberry fields at the Experimental Project Farm, Alliston, Prince Edward Island, indicated that total fruit production was greater from burning every second year than from every third year. Both burning treatments produced…

It is assumed that the flow of moisture in forest fuels and other woody materials is determined by the gradient of a quantity g which is a function of some property, or properties, of the moisture content. There appears to be no preferred choice for this function, hence moisture…

A new type of lightning direction-finding system is described which detects primarily discharges to ground and which discriminates against intracloud discharges and background noise. Ground discharges are selected by requiring the wideband magnetic waveforms to have rise times,…

Mass fires are likely to follow a nuclear attack. Since it is important to the civil defense program to be able to predict rate, duration, and extent of spread of such fires, the Office of Civil Defense, U.S. Department of Defense, issued a joint contract to the Forest Service…
