The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

The Wildland Fire Assessment Tool (WFAT) is a custom ArcMap toolbar that provides an interface between ArcGIS desktop software, FlamMap3 algorithms (Finney 2006) and First Order Fire Effects Model (FOFEM) algorithms (Reinhardt 2003) to produce predicted fire behavior and fire…

The 2012 wildfire season isn't over yet, but already this year is shaping up to be the one of the worst on record in the American West. According to the National Interagency Fire Center, with nearly two months still to go in the fire season, the total area already burned this…

Fire simulation models that consider the complex dynamics of weather, fuels, and terrain are essential to forecasting fire behavior. A growing number of such models are available, so understanding the differences in their predictions and sensitivity to drivers of fire behavior…

Evaluating economic efficiency of fire management program options requires information on the firefighting inputs, such as vehicles and crews, that would be needed to execute the program option selected. An algorithm was developed to translate automatically dollars allocated to…

The pattern of primary succession on the floodplain of the Tanana River in interior Alaska resulted largely from interactions between stochastic events and life history traits of the dominant species. Seed rain by willow (Salix alaxensis), alder (Alnus tenuifolia), poplar (…

Vegetation responses to climatic change can be studied retrospectively by utilizing the Quaternary fossil record. There has been controversy over the extent to which major changes in vegetation patterns at the continental scale lag behind the climatic changes that drive them,…

Forest harvest scheduling has been modeled using deterministic and stochastic programming models. Past models seldom address explicit spatial forest management concerns under the influence of natural disturbances. In this research study, we employ multistage full recourse…

The economics of wildfire is complicated because wildfire behavior depends on the spatial and temporal scale at which management decisions made, and because of uncertainties surrounding the results of management actions. Like the wildfire processes they seek to manage,…

Large-scale patterns of forest fire occurrence in the conterminous United States and Alaska, 2005-07
Wildland fire represents an important ecological mechanism in many forest ecosystems. It shapes the distributions of species, maintains the structure and function of fire-prone communities, and is a significant evolutionary force (Bond and Keeley 2005). At the same time, fire…

The genus Pinus orginated 150 million years ago in the Mesozoic Era, when high fire activity was a likely driver of the evolutionary divergence for this group of conifers. In the Annals of Forest Science, USGS ecologist Jon Keeley has reviewed the evolution of pine life history…
