The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

From the text ... 'In this particular paper, as a fire ecologist, I am not primarily interested in the economic use of fire for man, but rather in the ecological relations of fire to plants, animals, and man in those interesting and sometimes peculiar adjustments, preadaptations…

Economically sound decisions on fuel treatment require knowledge of treatment costs. Fuel treatment costs derived using an economic cost concept on two National Forests were found to be higher than reported by accounting methods. Costs are sufficiently high and variable to…

From the text ... 'Evaluation of costs and returns is undertaken trough various formal and informal techniques know in economics as 'benefit-cost analysis.' Application of such analysis to the use of fire can benefit from the experience gained in the economic analysis of water…

A series of graphs, tables and maps are presented that form the basis of a revised fire control plan at the Petawawa Forest Experiment Station. Called aids to fire control planning, they are classified into those describing: (a) the pattern of fire weather, (b) the trends in…

The earth itself: a 'good piece of geography' is basic - from there on, its a matter of human wisdom
From the text ... 'To demonstrate what can be accomplished through modern management when the lands are concentrated enough to be manageable, BLM last year began a Resource Conservation Area Program. The so-called :RCA's' were established on some 85 public land bundles, ranging…

In planning for sagebrush control, the following items should be considered: (1) Where, (2) when, (3) how, (4) grazing management afterward, and (5) the need for regrassing afterward. The purpose of this bulletin is to make information on these items available for use by…

Evaluating economic efficiency of fire management program options requires information on the firefighting inputs, such as vehicles and crews, that would be needed to execute the program option selected. An algorithm was developed to translate automatically dollars allocated to…

Vegetation responses to climatic change can be studied retrospectively by utilizing the Quaternary fossil record. There has been controversy over the extent to which major changes in vegetation patterns at the continental scale lag behind the climatic changes that drive them,…

Data from three separate but related surveys address the linkages between recreation and public perception of attitudes toward fire management. Recreation ranks high among alternative forest resource uses and is a serious concern vis-a-vis fire effects. Public acceptance of new…

Dominating all aspects of forest ecosystem structure and function in the Alaskan taiga is the cold environment. Low mean annual temperature (-3.5°C) and a short growing season (90–100 days) result in a restricted period during which biological activity may occur in these forests…
