The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Evaluations of fire management programs have been based primarily on ecological criteria rather than on cost-effectiveness. Determining cost-effectiveness poses several problems: current budgeting practices do not encourage such evaluations, assessment of the net value changes…

Development of equations for prediciting fuel bed depth (called 'bulk depth' herein) appropriate for modeling fire behavior in slash is described. Bulk depth (y) was correlated with the expected number of 1/4-to 1-inch-diameter particle intercepts per foot of vertical plane…

The recent fire history of northern Quebec biomes (54 000 km2), including the northern Boreal Forest, the southern and northern Forest—Tundra, and the Shrub Tundra, was documented by examining size and dates of 20th century wildfires using tree ring techniques. Results showed…
