The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

An increment borer is the primary tool used to collect samples for dendrochronological analyses. These are precision instruments and users should be trained in their proper use, care, and maintenance. In this paper, I describe the various parts of an increment borer and how to…

Giglio, Kendall, Mack
A pan-tropical active fire dataset derived from observations made with the Visible and Infrared Scanner (VIRS), onboard the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite, is described. The dataset consists of monthly 0.5° resolution fire summary products from January 1998…

Experience with the first 2 years of high quality data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) through quality control and validation has suggested several improvements to the original MODIS active fire detection algorithm described by Kaufman, Justice et…

Kirsch, Rideout
Increased scruitiny of federally funded programs combined with changes in fire management has created a demand for a new fire program analysis model. There is now a need for a model that displays tradeoffs between initial attack effectiveness and alternative funding levels. The…

Harvest planners often consider potential fire losses and timber production plans can influence fire management, but most timber harvest planning and fire management planning activities are carried out largely independently of each other. But road construction, timber harvesting…

From the text ... 'Wildfires consume budgets and put the heat on fire managers to justify and control suppression costs. ...We used data from the 2002 fire season to determine how WFSA-predicted outcomes compared to actual outcomes. ...Fire managers often underestimated the…

From the text ... 'Knowledge of fire behavior is critical for those who control wildfires. Fire managers must know spread rates and intensity--not just to eventually contain and extinguish the fire but also to keep their fire control personnel safe. Managers realize that weather…

From the text ... 'The Haines Index is the first attempt to construct a formal fire-weather index based upon features of the lower atmosphere.Does it work?... This index uses the environmental lapse rate (temperature difference) within a layer of air coupled with its moisture…

Lefort, Gauthier, Bergeron
The fire history of two adjacent regions of the boreal forest, one characterized by logging (Ontario -- 510,000 ha) and the other by small scale agricultural activities (Quebec -- 140,000 ha), was studied before and after these regions were opened up to settlement in 1916. From…

From the Text (p.13) ... 'At the conclusion of our survey of the ways in which human intelligence calls art to its aid in counterfeiting nature, we cannot but marvel at the fact that fire is necessary for almost every operation. It takes the sands of the Earth and melts them,…

Big-leaf mahogany was studied on nine mixed-species stands that became established naturally between 2 and 75 years ago after catastrophic disturbances (hurricane blowdown, fire, or bulldozer clearing). More than 50% of adult big-leaf mahogany trees had survived a severe…
