The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Wild Turkeys in the United States were very abundant in colonial times, declined drastically in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and have recently made a remarkable comeback. Suitability of eastern wilderness areas as Wild Turkey habitat depends on conditions in and around…

Agee, Huff
Goals for vegetation management in wilderness areas have been difficult to define. Managing for natural vegetation is confounded because 'natural' is not uniquely defined and past interruption of natural processes, particularly fire, has caused ecosystem changes that may be…

Economically sound decisions on fuel treatment require knowledge of treatment costs. Fuel treatment costs derived using an economic cost concept on two National Forests were found to be higher than reported by accounting methods. Costs are sufficiently high and variable to…

To explore the relative influences of substrate type, temperature, and moisture on litter decomposition rates, leaf litter of aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) and pine (Pinus concolor Loud. X P. banksiana Lamb.) was decomposed in laboratory microcosms for 16 weeks at 2, 10, 18…

Leaf litter of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) and lodgepole-jack pine (Pious contorta Loud. x P. banksiana Lamb.) was decomposed in laboratory microcosms at 2, 10, 18, or 260C and three Watering rates (15, 30, or 60 mL x week-1) for 16 weeks. Aspen litter lost 5.0-…

A Typha marsh community was subjected to draining and seasonal burning treatments to control the growth of emergent aquatics. Treatments resulted in an increase in total number of species after 3 years. Cover and frequency of Aster novi-belgii, Lycopus uniflorus, Epilobium…

Forty isolates of postfire ascomycetes (Pezizales) were tested for in vitro pathogenicity on seeds and germinants of lodgepole pine, Pinus contorta Dougl. Two known pathogens, Caloscypha fulgens (Pers.) Boud. and Botrytis cinerea Pers., were included as a check of the method.…

The null hypothesis that dispersal syndrome is not related to characteristics of forest tree populations was explored using a 4.5 ha mapped plot in a subtropical mixed-species forest in northern Florida, USA. Dispersal syndrome was not related to physiognomy, abundance, or…

A model was developed to help resolve the decision of how many fire fighters a large forest fire management agency should hire for a fire season to minimize expected cost plus fire loss. It addresses the use of fire fighters for both initial and extended attack, the temporary…

The problem of fire protection in the urban/wildland interface is a complex combination of three components: fire behavior and combustion, social and political factors, and the cooperation of property owners. By examing the problem's component parts, it is easier to understand…
