The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Rogers
The degree and manner in which different fires affect climate is a complete unknown, but is expected to vary substantially and may in fact represent a currently untapped climate mitigation service. In this webinar, Rogers will provide background on these issues, and describe his…

Butler
Bret Butler, of the Fire Lab in Missoula, addresses the problem stated in the IRPG, of how to calculate the increase in Safety Zone sizes when considering slope and wind. Currently, there is a beta version Safety Zone Calculator android app available for testing and feedback.

Finney
Climate change is to blame for many destructive natural phenomena. But Mark Finney, a research forester with the US Forest Service, says that climate change isn't the cause for a seeming increase of fires around the western United States. Finney says that weather, even a dry…

Ziel
Current and future risks posed by wildfires are key elements in decisions about management of those fires. Carrying evaluations of that risk more than a few days into the future requires stochastic approaches that depend on the climatology of environmental conditions that favor…

Goodrick, Forthofer
Scott Goodrick, a research meteorologist with the USDA Forest Service, and Jason Forthofer, a mechanical engineer with the USDA Forest Service, present a summary of vortices and wildland fire. Vortices are almost always present in the wildland fire environment and can sometimes…

Barnes, Saperstein, Ziel
Jennifer Barnes, Lisa Saperstein, and Robert Ziel provide a quick refresher on WFDSS Fire Behavior Models, updates on fuel models for Alaska, and provide information on where to sign up to help with fire behavior modeling this summer. Near Term Fire Behavior (NTFB) Refresher -…

Keane
Wildland fuels may be the most important consideration in fire management, not just because they are important inputs for predicting fire behavior (i.e., how fast and intense a fire gets), but also because fuels are the only factor that can effectively be controlled by direct…

Potter
Brian Potter, a research meteorologist with the USDA Forest Service, presented a summary of the state of science behind spot fires. Spotting is one characteristic of "extreme fire behavior," capable of short range acceleration of fires as well as producing long-distance spot…

Jandt
Randi Jandt talked about the evolution of Alaska firefighting practices (field and management)over the past 50 years. We are starting to be aware of the changes in climate and in Alaska forests: is the wildfire "problem" the same one we faced a half-century ago? Have our…
