The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Hawkes, Lawson
Fuel complexes resulting from power-saw spacing in young coastal Douglas-fir and interior lodgepole pine stands were quantitatively assessed for loading and duration of hazard. Fuel appraisal data were combined with fire weather regimes to derive fire behavior predictions for…

On rich productive mixedwood cutover sites in western Newfoundland, hardwood reproduction competes strongly with regenerating softwood seedlings, chiefly of balsam fir. An experiment was established to compare several chemical methods and one mechanical method of releasing the…

'We have developed a prototype National Fire Occurrence Data Library (NF0DL) to help fire managers interact with resource managers in meeting the new planning requirements of the Resources Planning Act and the National Forest Management Act. The data library provides means for…

Gehring, George
Forest fire retardants can corrode aircraft and mixing, storage, and handling facilities. Extent and severity of corrosion depend on the metals involved, specific exposure, and other factors. This report provides a nontechnical description of the mechanics of such corrosion and…

George, Johnson
Onsite fire retardant effectiveness is dependent on a retardant's physical (rheological) and chemical (active fire-inhibiting salt) properties. Quality control at each retardant base is necessary to assure cost-effectiveness is achieved. Using relatively simple techniques,…

Albini, Chase
Presents simplified equations for solving the fire containment problem. Equations can be used on a programmable pocket calculator to derive the burned area, given forward rate of spread, initial area, fire shape length/width ratio, and control-line construction rate. Equations…

Data from three separate but related surveys address the linkages between recreation and public perception of attitudes toward fire management. Recreation ranks high among alternative forest resource uses and is a serious concern vis-a-vis fire effects. Public acceptance of new…

Southwestern canyon woodlands, for purposes of this paper, are vegetation types along canyon bottoms for mostly third and fourth order drainages whose streams may be permanent or intermittent. These include habitat types within blue spruce, white fir, ponderosa pine, narrowleaf…

Viereck, Schandelmeier
Alaskan land and resource managers are moving from a policy of fire control to one of fire management. To use fire as a tool to reach resource management objectives, managers need information on fire effects and the role of fire in northern environment. The authors searched and…

This paper surveys available information on fire regimes and methodology employed in elucidating these regimes during the suppression, presuppression and post-glacial periods, principally in the boreal and Great Lakes-St. Lawrence forest regions of Ontario. The presettlement…
