The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Bessie, Johnson
Surface fire intensity (kilowatts per metre) and crown fire initiation were predicted using Rothermel's 1972 and Van Wagner's 1977 fire models with fuel data from 47 upland subalpine conifer stands (comprising Pinus contorta var. latifolia, Picea engelmannii, Abies lasiocarpa…

Delisle, Woodard, Titus, Johnson
This study assessed the variability of sample estimates for downed and dead woody fuel weight in natural lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl) stands using line-intersect sampling procedures. Equilateral triangles (30 m/side) were established at each of 40 sample sites with…

Turner, Koerper, Harmon, Lee
The potential need for national-level comparisons of greenhouse gas emissions, and the desirability of understanding terrestrial sources and sinks of carbon, has prompted interest in quantifying national forest carbon budgets. In this study, we link a forest inventory database,…

Gallant, Binnian, Omernik, Shasby
A map of ecoregions of Alaska has been produced as a framework for organizing and interpreting environmental data for State, national, and international inventory, monitoring, and research efforts. The map and descriptions of 20 ecological regions were derived by synthesizing…

Adamczewski, Gates, Soutar, Hudson
The insular population of barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus) on Coats Island, Northwest Territories, is ultimately limited by winter food resources. This study was undertaken to assess forage biomass available during summer and to determine the effects of…

Yarie, Mead
Equations are presented for estimating the twig, foliage, and combined biomass for 58 plant species in interior Alaska. The equations can be used for estimating biomass from percentage of foliar cover of 10-centimeter layers in a vertical profile from 0 to 6 meters. Few…
