The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

A change in the natural disturbance regime on the Copper River Delta, Alaska, has reduced the level of early seral stage vegetation communities suitable for moose (Alces alces) wintereing habitat. Consequently, we evaluated the use of a rotary-axe to increase willow (Salix spp…

In the black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP) forests which span North America, low annual temperatures, high nitrogen and phosphorus absorption by feathermosses and small litter inputs contribute to reduced annual N and P transformation rates in soils of these ecosystems. In…

We described an effective and inexpensive device for sampling forest floors. It is based on a rechargeable, battery-powered drill that drives a sharpened steel coring tube. The corer is simple to fabricate, is lightweight (3.5 kg) and can be used easily by one person to obtain…

The impact of surface fires on the thermal and trophic conditions of forest soils is studied in burnt areas of larch (Larix gmelinii) forest in the northern taiga zone of central Siberia. The duration of the regeneration period on burnt areas is also examined and viability of…

Throughout its geographic range, the black-backed woodpecker (Picoides arcticus) is rare and appears very similar in its foraging ecology to 2 broadly sympatric congeners, the three-toed (P. tridactylus) and hairy woodpecket (P cillosus. The purposes of our study were to test…

Boreal forests cover 10% of the land surface and experience wide ranges of temperature and precipitation. In many parts of the boreal zone, fire drives vegetation succession, landscape dynamics and carbon cycling. Global climate change may affect the frequency and size of…

We examined the effects of woody substrate and stand age on diversity and relative abundance of bryophytes, lichens, and fungi in trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) mixedwood boreal forests in Alberta. Point sampling was carried out on surfaces of downed woody material…

In this paper I wish to review certain facets of the role of fire in the ecology of forest game, then go on to speculate about how forest fire protection may influence populations of forest wildlife. Before considering the effects of fire on game, it is necessary to remember…
