This year, Smokey Bear turns 75. Think about that for a second-a public service announcement campaign just turned three-quarters of a century old! The Smokey program is the longest running public service announcement campaign in U.S. history and is...
Welcome to the ArcBurn Resource Library
The ArcBurn project is designed to integrate cultural resources information into fire management decision processes. This extends beyond NHPA compliance and requires a collaborative approach among fire scientists, forest ecologists, archaeologists, and fire managers to ensure that the best science is effectively and appropriately used to guide management plans; and that these plans are defensible and reasonable under dynamic environmental conditions. One objective of the project is to quantify the direct effects of heat treatment (e.g. wildfires) and the indirect effects of wildfires (e.g. erosion) on prehistoric cultural resources including stone tool (lithic) assemblages, ceramics, and architectural stone. Other objectives include evaluating and synthesizing available field data, management plans, and lessons learned; integrating project results into a Knowledge Synthesis and operational/decision support tools; and providing tech transfer/science applications support. To help meet those objectives, two pre-defined searches of the FRAMES Resource Catalog are provided below: 1) Fire and Cultural Resources, and 2) Fire and Archaeology. Funding for this project is provided by the Joint Fire Science Program. For more information, please visit the project's website.

America is not simply a federation of states but a confederation of regions. Some have always held national attention, some just for a time. Slopovers examines three regions that once dominated the national narrative and may now be returning to...
Although there is convincing scientific research for the role of Indigenous fire practices in sustainable land management, Indigenous peoples' involvement in policy-making is limited. This paper presents findings from a fire management workshop where...
Purpose of Review: The objectives of this paper are to briefly review basic risk management and analytics concepts, describe their nexus in relation to wildfire response, demonstrate real-world application of analytics to support response decisions and...
Until Euro-American colonization, Indigenous people used fire to modify eco-cultural systems, developing robust Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK). Since 1980, wildfire activity has increased due to fire suppression and climate change. In 2017, in...
This paper examines humour as an emergent theme within a long-term study of the gendered terrain of wildfire management. It analyses a set of semi-structured interviews that the study utilised to facilitate in-depth conversations with firefighter women...
This case study explores the social dynamics surrounding a destructive wildfire in central Montana. We examine the settlement patterns and events that respondents felt helped create high social vulnerability among a significant portion of local...
Central America, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Venezuela and Peru are projected to experience an increase over the short term in the number of recorded wildfires and area affected, accompanied by an obvious loss of housing units,...
The patterns and drivers of late Quaternary vegetation dynamics in the southeastern United States are poorly understood due to low site density, problematic chronologies, and a paucity of independent paleoclimate proxy records. We present a well-dated...
The number of wildfires occurring globally is exacerbated by urbanisation and changes in weather patterns. In response, researchers have conducted studies of wildfires and human behaviour in regions such as Australia and the USA. Regions in Europe have...

Prescribed burning is increasingly being used in the deciduous forests of eastern North America. Recent work suggests that historical fire frequency has been overestimated east of the prairie-woodland transition zone, and its introduction could...
Many ecosystems of conservation concern owe their unique characteristics to long-term management by indigenous peoples. However, there are serious debates concerning the degree and extent of this influence. We argue that delving into the long-term...
This study brought together a team of ecologists, archaeologists, environmental historians, indigenous peoples, and land managers within a research framework combining an ethnographic investigation of traditional practices with cutting-edge...
Present day lead pollution is an environmental hazard of global proportions. A correct determination of natural lead levels is very important in order to evaluate anthropogenic lead contributions. In this paper, the anthropogenic signature of early...
In this final paper, we summarize the results of the eco-archaeological project, address five research questions concerning anthropogenic burning on the central California coast in Late Holocene and early historical times, and outline plans for future...
The Schultz Fire of 2010 burned just over 15,000 forested acres and caused the evacuation of hundreds of homes. Heavy floods followed the fire, resulting in extensive damage to property downstream from the charred hillsides. Nearly three years later,...
This webinar will provide an introduction to the new edition of the Rainbow series that provides fire and land management professionals and policy makers with a greater understanding of the value of cultural resource protection and the methods...
This state-of-knowledge review provides a synthesis of the effects of fire on cultural resources, which can be used by fire managers, cultural resource (CR) specialists, and archaeologists to more effectively manage wildland vegetation, fuels, and fire...
Aim: Despite small and transient populations, early MÄori transformed large areas of New Zealand's forest landscapes. We sought to isolate the biophysical predictors that explain forest loss in the pre-historic (i.e. pre-European) period in New...
