Willow ranged 40-87% in fecal samples. Dominant component averaging 72%. Resin birch 11%. Mountain cranberry was highly digestible. Individual species of willows browsed by moose in approximate relative proportion to stem density. Birch was a very minor component. High phenolithic resin content in adventitious basal sprouts may have inhibitory effects on digestibility. Alder plants occasionally used a individuals, were avoided. Willow may be 90% of diet from December to April. Used diamondleaf willow, grayleaf willow, Richardson willow and SAL. Average digestibility for all was 35.2%. Crude protein was 7.0% (Milke) but 6.24% this study. Recommended for moose 6.5%.
