A coalition of federal, state, and local agencies recently developed and funded a project in Alachua County, Florida to retrofit a Florida home and surrounding yard to reduce its vulnerability to wildfires, as well as other hazards. The entire process of retrofitting this home is captured here. You will learn about the practical steps that were taken to reduce wildfire risks - from landscaping to home construction and design. In addition, several multihazard modifications were made to the home, including structural upgrades to protect against wind and moisture. When landscaping to reduce wildfire risk, there are other landscape objectives (e.g., water and energy conservation) that can be achieved simultaneously. These are discussed throughout this presentation, as well as additional structural modifications that could have been made to the home. After viewing this presentation, you should be able to identify several simple and effective steps you can take to reduce your wildfire risk while maintaining and enhancing other benefits of your landscape. The principal partners in the project included the homeowner, Institute of Business & Home Safety, Florida Division of Forestry, Florida Division of Emergency Management, USDA Forest Service, University of Florida, Alachua County Fire & Rescue Department, and the Florida Department of Corrections.
