From the text...'From 1961 to 2000, 213,000 ha of European forest were affected every year by fire (around 90% in Mediterranean coutries [Schelhaas et al 2003]); similar amounts havee burned in the 21st centrury (Wolf-Crowther et al. 2011). These burned forests have been increasingly harvested for biomass uses in recent years, although there is no quantitative data available for the region. Continental and national figures can mask locally high levels of salvage logging in fire-prone areas, where forest clearing can become reactive rather than planned management.' © 2016 Society for Conservation Biology
