From the text ... 'Wilderness management is important to a large segment of the public. The 1988 fires showed that clearly. It is also clear that fire is an integral part of the wilderness. Educating the public, based on solid research, will be an important component of wilderness fire management in the future. As human developments surrounding parks and wilderness areas increase, and as the effects of smoke and fire crossing boundary lines occur, managers will have abundant opportunities to use their public relations skills as they pursue the goal of managing fire 'to preserve natural conditions.''
