On 6 May 1935, about 200 acres of Dallington Forest, East Sussex, were destroyed by fire. I was not present in the forest until the fall of that year, and left in the fall of 1936, but notes made during this period and during ten days at the end of May and beginning of June 1939, on the breeding-season succession of bird life in burnt woodland, may be of interest as this .subject does not seem to have been studied in Britain. Outside the breeding season, various species appeared on the burnt area which bred elsewhere, but no proper notes were made on this point, and fall-winter distribution needs a resident observer even more than breeding distribution.
