From the Summary (p.58-59)... 'In this survey of the stabilized vegetations of the Southeastern Coastal Plain, nine well defined major communities (associes and associations of Clements) are described. In the differentiation of these the principal controlling conditions, aside from the over-all climatic factors, are soil texture, as this controls water and nutrient (especially calcium), length of exposure to high water table (hydro-period), salt spray (near coast) and fire, involving all except the aquatic.'
