From the text...'A long-term study designed to gather information on fire danger and the occurrence of forest fires in Georgia was started in 1959. This work is being conducted by the Southern Forest Fire Laboratory with the cooperation of the Georgia Forest Research Council and the Georgia Forestry Commission. The objectives of this study are (1) to build up an accurate record of forest fire and fire danger data for each of the 10 state districts and (2) to establish trends, rate of change, and other relationships between fire danger and selected items of fire business that may be useful in state fire control management. The Georgia Forestry Commission routinely operates approximately 150 fire danger stations throughout the state. In addition to the state stations, the U. S. Forest Service and private companies operate several more. From this network, 40 stations were originally selected on the basis of geographical location and excellence of operation to be the 'key' stations (fig. 1) from which the raw data used in the analyses would be drawn. At the time this study was undertaken Georgia was using the 8-100-0 fire danger meter, the latest and best method available to estimate fire danger in the Southeast. During the years since this study was initiated, a new system, the National Fire Danger Rating System, has been developed. During 1964, Georgia operated both the 8-100-0 and the national systems of danger measurement so its personnel could become familiar with the new system and learn to use it in place of the old one. This publication was prepared to summarize the data collected with the 8-100-0 system from 1959 to 1964.' By permission of The Georgia Forestry Commission.
