Water gel explosives (also called slurries in the explosives industry) are safe, stable explosives that have been packaged in 100-foot-long lengths for line-building applicatioins. The Missoula Equipment Development Center (MEDC) conducted demonstrations with this explosive in the California and Pacific Northwest Regiions. Results showed that water gels offer a reliable, cost-effective means of line construction on fuels management projects. At present, the lack of certified Forest Service blasters and explosives storage facilities are the major factors limiting the use of water gels. A report on Equipment Development and Test Project 2697--Blasting Prescribed Fire Control Lines, funded by the Aviation and Fire Management Staff.
