From the introduction ... 'In recent years, considerable research has gone into developing inventory procedures for forest residues. However, little apparent work has been done concerning what is consumed by broadcast burning this fuel. Present inventory procedures can be of greater benefit if slight modifications are made so accurate remeasurements of slash areas following burning are possible. The impact of slash burning upon air quality is considerable. However, it is our opinion that published consumed residue figures for the Pacific Northwest are greatly exaggerated. The figrues are, for the most part, a summation of pure guesses by field personnel who have been provided with little or no training or guidelines. These gross erors will continue until studies provide reliable guidelines for filed personnel to follow. This paper presents a procedure for accurately remeasuring broadcast burned forest residues. Reliable burn data can provide the following benefits: ...'
