The National Weather Service Fire Weather Program provides weather forecasting and meteorological support services to state and federal wildland fire management agencies. An Intergovernmental Fire Weather User's Summit, sponsored by the National Weather Service (NWS) and the National Fire Weather Advisory Group (NFWAG), provided a forum for discussing issues of mutual interest to fire managers and NWS. The Summit also generated input for managers planning for the modernization of the NWS Fire Weather Program. The Summit provided a model for intergovernmental cooperation with 13 federal, state, and local agencies represented. In an era of great change for government agencies at all levels, there is a need to form partnerships to achieve mutual goals. The NWS seeks to maintain and strengthen its partnerships with the land management agencies as it proceeds with its modernization and associated restructuring (MAR). Users have expressed concerns about how the MAR will impact their operations. They are anticipating an increase in their need for accurate, site specific forecasts for prescribed burning and ecosystem management. The demand for more detailed forecasts for smoke management is also on the rise. Experienced forecasters with a solid grounding in the specific needs of the fire management community must be an integral part of the modernized NWS. A series of panel discussions addressed a variety of issues which may ultimately impact the workload of NWS. Among these issues are the changing perception of the role of fire in ecosystem management, the urban/wildland interface, smoke management, and all risk management teams. New directions in Fire Weather related research were also discussed. Fifteen recommendations grew out of the Intergovernmental Fire Weather User's Summit.
