Wildland fire has shaped the conterminous United States for millennia. During the presettlement era between 4.5 and 11 percent of the landscape burned annually. Today approximately 0.8 percent burns annually. Fire emission estimates from presettlement wildland fire and present wildland fire are proportionally similar.
