Hazards created by smoke from a prescribed fire are very real. Every year, many people are killed or injured as a result of accidents precipitated by smoke on highways. Recognizing the problem, state and local governments are seeking more laws to control when and where fire can be used as a management tool by forest farmers. If fire is to remain a part of the forest management arsenal, forest farmers are going to have to take smoke into consideration when planning a burn. To aid with this task, the Alabama Forestry Commision developed a screening system for managing smoke in the South.Published by Forest Landowners Association. Abstracts reproduced by permission.
