The fire characteristics chart has been expanded and modified to indicate crown fire behavior. Any point on the chart provides a simultaneous representation of rate of spread, unit energy, fireline intensity, flame length, and power of the fire. The contrast in behavior between different fires can readily be seen when plotted on the same chart. A new feature based on the relative power of the fire to the power of the wind indicates whether the fire will be wind-driven or dominated by the convection column. Comparisons with actual fire observations indicate that these features are correctly indicating fire characteristics.
