A major cooperative research effort between the Northern Region and the Intermountain Forest and Range Experiment Station is devoted to the use and effects of prescribed fire. Prescribed fires in logging slash have been scheduled during the entire available burning season. A specturm of weather, fuel moisture, and fuel volume conditions were sampled to evaluate the effects of these variables on burn accomplishment and smoke plume behavior. Preliminary results from the research have been combined with established meteorological principles to prepare this discussion of smoke dispersion.
