Project Objectives: The overall objective of this project is to construct a fully functional decision support system that wildland managers can use to develop optimal or near-optimal fuel treatment prescriptions. The task of accomplishing this goal has been divided into a number of stages (see the section 2.0, Materials and Methods), and while it would be possible to develop separate goals for each stage, doing so would only serve to de-emphasize the overall goal of the project. If this project is successful, wildland managers will have access to a powerful computerized tool designed to function in conjunction with the ARCINFO and ARC VIEW software systems, which are the two most widely used 015 packages in use today. This tool will allow managers to develop prescriptions that precisely identify when and where each type of fuel treatment activity should be conducted. This tool will be interactive and allow managers to modify its automatically generated prescriptions, thereby taking full advantage of the expertise of the managers. Finally, the system will be extremely flexible, and will be able to readily incorporate the results of future research that quantifies the costs and/or effectiveness of various fuel treatment techniques in various ecosystems.
