A report to the NWCG Smoke Committee assessing the occurrence of smoke and air quality information within 91courses and 125 position task books based on the occurrence of smoke and air quality keywords, and depth of smoke management information. Of the courses, two contained content that enabled a working knowledge of smoke management and air quality principles: 'Smoke Management Techniques' (RX 410) and 'Prescribed Fire Plan Preparation' (RX 341). Ten position tasks books were significant in their intent in giving the individual insight into management of smoke and air quality issues. Whether positions such as strategic operational planners (SOPLs), prescribed fire burn bosses (RXBs) and prescribed fire managers (RXMs) have smoke management training will vary by agency. The results of the assessment have triggered internal NWCG discussions and progress towards greater consistency in smoke management training requirements among agencies and wildland fire positions.
