This study will examine citizens' knowledge of and perceptions about smoke management and associated communication strategies before and after exposure to a smoke event and/or communication event that addresses smoke. This study is an expansion of a larger multi-region project examining communities where smoke (from wildfire or prescribed fire) has impacted citizens, factors that influence tolerance for smoke, and associated communication strategies. In this new GRIN study one or two sites will be selected from the pool of sites in the parent project for more in-depth study through a follow-up survey. The site(s) will be chosen based on highest occurrence of smoke, fire, and communication events of summer 2012. The follow-up survey will be administered to the same individuals who completed a survey the prior year, producing longitudinal data and allowing us to analyze how their opinions changed after 2012 events.
