The proposed project is designed to contribute to Task 1, Part 3 of RFP 2001-1 from the JFSP. Generally, the proposed study aims to improve understanding of the perceptions, knowledge, and attitudes of the public regarding fire, fire risk and fire recovery techniques in wilderness, wildland, and wildland/urban interface areas. The project will be based on developing and linking a fire-attitudes module to the ongoing National Survey on Recreation and the Environment 2000 (NSRE). The NSRE is a multi-faceted telephone survey focusing on a variety of outdoor recreation behaviors and environmental issues. It is a joint venture of a number of federal agencies including the USDA Forest Service (USFS), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), USD1 Bureau of Land Management (BLM), USD1 National Park Service (NPS), US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and USDA Economic Research Service (ERS). Using the NSRE and current 0MB approval, the fire-attitudes module will be applied in the fall and spring of successi.ve years obtaining 5,000 observations from each period. Market segmentation models based on cluster analysis and regression will be used to relate socio-demographics and lifestyles to fire attitudes, knowledge and management preferences. The segmentation results will provide essential information for the efficient development and targeting of fire education and outreach programs to various sectors of the public.
