Welcome to the ArcBurn Resource Library
The ArcBurn project is designed to integrate cultural resources information into fire management decision processes. This extends beyond NHPA compliance and requires a collaborative approach among fire scientists, forest ecologists, archaeologists, and fire managers to ensure that the best science is effectively and appropriately used to guide management plans; and that these plans are defensible and reasonable under dynamic environmental conditions. One objective of the project is to quantify the direct effects of heat treatment (e.g. wildfires) and the indirect effects of wildfires (e.g. erosion) on prehistoric cultural resources including stone tool (lithic) assemblages, ceramics, and architectural stone. Other objectives include evaluating and synthesizing available field data, management plans, and lessons learned; integrating project results into a Knowledge Synthesis and operational/decision support tools; and providing tech transfer/science applications support. To help meet those objectives, two pre-defined searches of the FRAMES Resource Catalog are provided below: 1) Fire and Cultural Resources, and 2) Fire and Archaeology. Funding for this project is provided by the Joint Fire Science Program. For more information, please visit the project's website.

Agricultural fire for land preparation is central in the livelihoods of subsistence farmers practicing shifting cultivation. Achieving a good agricultural burn, one in which the biomass is thoroughly consumed within the chosen area, depends on specific...
Traditional knowledge about fire and its effects held by indigenous people, who are connected to specific landscapes, holds promise for informing contemporary fire and fuels management strategies and augmenting knowledge and information derived from...
Agro-pastoral activities in the past act as environmental legacy and have shaped the current cultural landscape in the European Alps. This study reports about prehistoric fire incidents and their impact on the flora and vegetation near the village of...
Throughout the world spontaneous growth of vegetation (regrowth) often results from land use change such as reduced or ceased agricultural activity. Abundant and extensive regrowth typically has significant implications such as risks to human wellbeing...
Complex couplings and feedback among climate, fire, and herbivory drive short- and long-term patterns of land cover change (LCC) in savanna ecosystems. However, understanding of spatial and temporal LCC patterns in these environments is limited,...
The research investigated understandings of risk and resilience in emergency management (EM) policy and practice. The core findings illustrate how a complex of institutionalised socio-cultural expectations and standardised processes that is, evidence-...
Indigenous and traditional peoples worldwide have used fire to manipulate their environment for thousands of years. These long-standing practices still continue and have considerable relevance for today's land managers. This discussion explores...
