Welcome to the ArcBurn Resource Library
The ArcBurn project is designed to integrate cultural resources information into fire management decision processes. This extends beyond NHPA compliance and requires a collaborative approach among fire scientists, forest ecologists, archaeologists, and fire managers to ensure that the best science is effectively and appropriately used to guide management plans; and that these plans are defensible and reasonable under dynamic environmental conditions. One objective of the project is to quantify the direct effects of heat treatment (e.g. wildfires) and the indirect effects of wildfires (e.g. erosion) on prehistoric cultural resources including stone tool (lithic) assemblages, ceramics, and architectural stone. Other objectives include evaluating and synthesizing available field data, management plans, and lessons learned; integrating project results into a Knowledge Synthesis and operational/decision support tools; and providing tech transfer/science applications support. To help meet those objectives, two pre-defined searches of the FRAMES Resource Catalog are provided below: 1) Fire and Cultural Resources, and 2) Fire and Archaeology. Funding for this project is provided by the Joint Fire Science Program. For more information, please visit the project's website.

From the text (p.24) ... '..., the term 'catastrophic wildfire' is not scientifically credible; rather, it is a term based upon misinformation, as well as cultural fears and misconceptions about fire. There is a major deficiency of...
Slash and burn agriculture is a traditional and predominant land use practice in Madagascar and its relevance in the context of forest preservation is significant. At the end of a cycle of culture, the fields become mostly weed covered and the soil...
In Canaima National Park (CNP), Venezuela, a protected area inhabited by the Pemón people, socio-cultural and demographic changes have contributed to the apparent unsustainable use of fire, leading to forest and habitat loss. This over-use of fire,...
'Fire regime' has become, in recent decades, a key concept in many scientific domains. In spite of its wide spread use, the concept still lacks a clear and wide established definition. Many believe that it was first discussed in a famous...
Pteridium caudatum is a fern that frequently invades burnt areas in the Yucatan Peninsula and other neotropical sites. While post-fire regeneration of this fern apparently occurs mainly by vegetative means, little is known about the role of its spores...
Forests and grassy vegetation (savannas and grasslands) are alternative ecosystem states in many tropical landscapes. Relative to forests the grassy ecosystems are poorly known and poorly conserved, partly because they were thought to be products of...
The risks, hazards, and relative severity of wildland fires are presented here within the ecological context of historical natural fire regimes, time, space, and process. As the public dialogue on the role and impacts of wildland fire increases, it is...

Summary1. Relationships between vegetation, climate and disturbance are likely to be altered in the near future as a result of changes in both climate and human impacts on ecosystems. These changes could trigger species losses and distribution shifts...
