Job location: National Forests of Oregon and Washington

Wage: $16.90 to $25.60 per hour

Duration: seasonal summer employment, March - October (begin & end dates are negotiable)

Background: Nature's Capital, LLC is a small business headquartered in Boise, Idaho. Our mission is to assist clients throughout the Pacific Northwest in the maintenance and enhancement of the natural capital assets found in biological and physical resources. We provide scientifically sound, high quality ecological inventory and assessment information and management recommendations founded in knowledge of ecosystem processes and functions. We are seeking to build a roster of qualified candidates for fulltime temporary forestry positions. Positions will be located near major urban centers (e.g., Bend, OR) in Oregon or Washington. Non-field / office work will be conducted remotely. Compensation will be provided for increased costs of remote office work.

Description: Employees in forestry positions will collect and summarizing data on forest stand structure and composition. Work activities will include, for example, making accurate and precise measurements of tree growth attributes (DBH, height, growth increment, age), stand density, and reference point location; determining habitat type; making observations and recording data on habitat indicator species; and environmental factors. Duties may include recording, summarizing, and proofreading technical information; use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or GIS software; or interpreting spatial imagery or other technical map products. The position will require experience in back country travel; experience in use of basic tools such as a field compass, topographic maps, clinometer, altimeter, hypsometer, basal area factor scope, and global positioning systems; and operation of motor vehicles on unimproved roadways. Duties may also include assisting with botanical or wildlife surveys.

Work activities require ability to walk for several hours (carrying a backpack with field and personal equipment) in rugged terrain and work in inclement weather conditions. Work schedules may require occasional to frequent overnight travel and primitive camping in remote locations.

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants will be considered for Forester or Forestry Technician positions based on education, experience, or a combination of education and experience summarized as follows:

Forestry Technician:

  • An associate degree in forestry, resource management, or related field.
  • Experience or coursework applicable to the position description (e.g., mensuration, plant identification, or basic silviculture practices).

Forester:

  • A bachelor’s degree in forestry, resource management, or related field.
  • Several seasons of field experience or a combination of field experience and relevant coursework (e.g., in silviculture, mensuration, plant identification, or forest pathology/entomology)

Work experience or course work should demonstrate knowledge of forest mensuration, silviculture, or ability to complete tasks outlined in the position description (for example, experience with cruising, timber marking, or layout and design; experience identifying habitat indicator plant species, common tree insect and disease pathogens, and tree damage; measuring tree growth; and sampling forest vegetation using common stand examination, ecological site inventory, or forest inventory analysis methods). Back country experience must be documented through work history or recreational activities such as hiking, skiing, or mountaineering. Current certification in standard first aid is required (more advanced certification, for example, Wilderness First Responder, is preferred).
