Serotiny refers to seed storage in fruit structures for more than one year within the canopy until an environmental factor triggers seed release. If the environmental cue signals improved conditions for seedling establishment, the trait can be adaptive...
Alaska Reference Database
The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.
Fire disturbance at high latitudes modifies a broad range of ecosystem properties and processes, thus it is important to monitor the response of vegetation to fire disturbance. This monitoring effort can be aided by lidar remote sensing, which captures...
Slash-and-burn agriculture is an important driver of deforestation and ecosystem degradation, with large effects on biodiversity and carbon sequestration. This study was conducted in a forest in Madagascar, which consists of fragments of slash-and-burn...
Prescribed burning has, in the past decade, become the focus of debate among policy makers, federal and private land managers, and the public. To manage fire effectively, the USDA Forest Service has formally recognized the need for economic analysis....
Wildfire, like many natural hazards, affects large landscapes with many landowners and the risk individual owners face depends on both individual and collective protective actions. In this study, we develop a spatially explicit game theoretic model to...
A number of remote sensing studies have evaluated the temporal trends of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI or vegetation greenness) in the North American boreal forest during the last two decades, often getting quite different results....
The USDA Forest Service stores fire occurrence data in a relational data base for planning, analysis, and other purposes. Weather observations are stored in the same data base for all five federal land management agencies and some state wildland...
From the Summary ... 'The bobwhite is known to eat 129 different kinds of weed seeds.A single bird was found to eat as many as 12,000, 18,000 and 30,000 seeds of one kind of weed in a day. They eat 15 grams, or half an ounce, of weed seed daily...
From the text (p.3) ... 'The purpose of this book is to present an overview of our current understanding on the interrelationship between fire, climate, and carbon cycling in boreal forest. The chapters are organized into four sections. The...
From the Conclusions (p.63) ... 'The causes and impacts of fire in the boreal Eurasian region are multifaceted due to its rich cultural diversity and a broad range of socioeconomic and environmental conditions. Thus, it is impossible to draw any...
