Rate of fire spread and flame length were observed on six prescribed headfires in the sagebrush (Artemisia)/bunchgrass vegetation type in western North America. Spread rate and flame length predictions from the fire behavior prediction system BEHAVE...
Alaska Reference Database
The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.
Spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana) has defoliated the balsam fir (Abies balsamea) component of many eastern North American forests, resulting in widespread mortality of these trees. Consequently, managers have become concerned about the...
Over the past four years scientists have cooperatively monitored fire behavior and smoke chemistry, on a number of large prescribed fires in the Province of Ontario. Primary cooperating agencies include Forestry Canada, the United States Forest Service...

Aerial drip torch devices have potential for dramatically increasing acreage burned annually. Aerial burning requires different and broader concepts than hand burrning, more advance planning, more attention to detail, and at least a basic understanding...
Aerial ignition using plastic spheres (similar to ping-pong balls) charged with potassium permanganate activated by ethylene glycol and dropped from a low flying helicopter is a proven system to safely prescribe burn large areas in a short time for...
In response to the 2002 fire season's fatal aircraft accidents, the USDA Forest Service and USDI Bureau of Land Management (BLM) jointly established an independent, five-member Blue Ribbon Commission (the panel - Appendix A) to identify essential...
The rheological properties of forest and brush land fire retardant solutions significantly affect their performance during and following aerial discharge and subsequent distribution within the fuel ladder. The degree of dispersion, the integrity of the...
