The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

New methods for retrieving tropospheric ozone column depth and absorbing aerosol (smoke and dust) from the Earth Probe—Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (EP/TOMS) are used to follow pollution and to determine interannual variability and trends. During intense fires over Indonesia…

The decade of the 1920s was somewhat of a paradox for range science. A. W. Sampson published 3 books that were widely used as text for higher education classes in range management. The United States Department of Agriculture. Forest Service expanded their mandate to manage…

Spring and summer simulations were carried out using the Canadian Fire Behavior Prediction (FBP) and U.S. BEHAVE systems to study the role of vegetation and weather on fire behavior in the mixedwood boreal forest. Stands at Lake Duparquet (Quebec, Canada) were characterized as…

Given that fire is the most important disturbance of the boreal forest, climatically induced changes in fire frequency (i.e., area burnt per year) can have important consequences on the resulting forest mosaic age-class distribution and composition. Using archives and…

From the text... 'Reed and Johnson (1999) responded to our previous paper (Huggard and Arsenault 1999) in which we point out a mistake that has been made in some analyses of fire frequency, primarily in studies from western Canada. The mistake arises from using a reverse…

Little is known about habitat use by the endemic Hispaniolan White-winged crossbill (Loxia leucoptera megaplaga), in part because of its small population size and wandering tendencies; before this study only a single nest had been described for the species, From 1996 to 1999 we…

Prescribed burning costs are extemely variable, even if conditions are similar. This variability complicates planning and evaluation of prescribed burning programs and budgets, resulting in imprecise projecions of their economic benefits. Evaluating the worth of prescribed…

Temporal changes in community organization were examined in a 300+ year chronosequence of understorey vegetation data from lodgepole pine forests recovering from fire in central British Columbia. Changes between six age-classes of forest were quantified as shifts in the…

We investigated modes of regeneration of dominant species of the mexical vegetation after fire. The mexical shrubland shows a remarkable structural. morphological, and floristic similarity to Mediterranean-type vegetation and is considered a relict of the Madro-Tertiary Geoflora…

When cedar-hemlock (CH) forests of northern Vancouver Island are clear-cut and replanted, growth of replanted trees is often poor. This growth check can be overcome with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilization, suggesting that it may be because of deficiencies of these…

To reconstruct a natural fire regime it is necessary to estimate the historical fire cycle when human influence was less evident. This can be accomplished through the construction of a fire-origin map. The dynamic fire regime is a result of interactions among forest ecosystem…
