The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Hirsch, Martell
Information regarding the productivity and effectiveness of initial attack fire crews is essential to a wide variety of forest fire management activities. This paper provides a selective review of crew productivity research conducted in Australia, Canada, and the United States…

A control volume numerical method is used to predict the temperature distribution inside a soil extent, the surface of which has been swept by a two-dimensional flame front with pre-defined velocity and temperature distributions. Natural and forced convection, as well as…

The use of the terms 'growth' and 'acceleration' appears to be inconsistent in the literature and we believe this inconsistency has hindered our understanding of behaviour in the early stages of a fire. The development of a fire from a point ignition to some equilibrium state…

An empirical model is presented which relates fractional reduction in loading to fuel element diameter and moisture content for surface and aerial fuels consumed near the fire front in a spreading crown fire. The model is based upon data from a series of experimental crown fires…

The soil seed bank (seed and vegetative propagules) of a jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) ecosystem was investigated using direct propagule emergence from soil cores in greenhouse experiments, and visual examination of rhizome/rooting systems in situ. Of the 985 emergents…

Schneller, Frandsen
A new method of measuring heat flux from smoldering combustion is introduced. Currently available methods lack the accuracy of measuring the true heat flux. This is because of either the unavailability of required physical properties of the transporting medium (Like time…

A computational procedure for predicting the buoyant plume above a line fire in a cross wind is reported. The present model takes into account the interaction between the plume and the surrounding flow by solving the two-dimensional equations for the conservation of mass,…

This work considers wildfire growth over variable topography. Through an analysis of fire perimeter growth for homogeneous conditions over a surface of constant slope, a mathematical model of fire growth for heterogeneous conditions and variable surface is proposed. The…

Santoni, Balbi, Dupuy
A two-dimensional non-stationary model of fire spread including slope effects is proposed. The numerical study of this model allows us to predict the rate of spread, the fire front perimeter and the temperature distribution for a fire spreading across a fuel bed under slope…

The analysis of laboratory fire experiments led to the development of a reaction-diffusion model for the spread of fire across a fuel bed in windless and slopeless conditions. A method for the determination of coefficients in this model based on the dynamic features of a…

To determine the effect of fire front width on surface fire spread rates, a series of simultaneously ignited experimental fires was carried out in a pine plantation. Fires were ignited in plots with widths ranging from 0.5 m to 10 m and were burned in low wind conditions. Flame…

Examining the relationship of El Niño to weather patterns in Alaska shows wide climate variances that depend on the teleconnection between the tropics and the northern latitudes. However, the weather patterns exhibited in Alaska during and just after moderate to strong El Niño…

In many forest types, over half of the total stand biomass is located in the forest floor. Carbon emissions during wildland fire are directly related to biomass (fuel) consumption. Consumption of forest floor fuel varies widely and is the greatest source of uncertainty in…

The availability of viable seed can act as an important constraint on plant regeneration following disturbance. This study presents data on seed quantity and quality for black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.), a semiserotinous conifer that dominates large areas of North…

Today, validation or accuracy assessment is an integral component of most mapping projects incorporating remotely sensed data. Other spatial information may not be so stringently evaluated, but at least requires meta-data that documents how the information was generated. This…
