Alaska Reference Database

The Alaska Reference Database originated as the standalone Alaska Fire Effects Reference Database, a ProCite reference database maintained by former BLM-Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist Randi Jandt. It was expanded under a Joint Fire Science Program grant for the FIREHouse project (The Northwest and Alaska Fire Research Clearinghouse). It is now maintained by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium and FRAMES, and is hosted through the FRAMES Resource Catalog. The database provides a listing of fire research publications relevant to Alaska and a venue for sharing unpublished agency reports and works in progress that are not normally found in the published literature.

Despite increasing temperatures since the end of the Little Ice Age (ca. 1850), wildfire frequency has decreased as shown in many field studies from North America and Europe. We believe that global warming since 1850 may have triggered decreases in...

Analyses of species composition and tree increment cores from 145 stands in central Quebec were used to study the forest history and stand dynamics. Windspread fires, possibly synchronous, burned across central Quebec in at least 3 periods of record (...

Extreme fire seasons in recent years and associated high suppression expenditures have brought about a chorus of calls for reform of federal firefighting structure and policy. Given the political nature of the topic, a critical review of past trends in...

Structure of native vertebrate faunas within 12 different forest types were related to features of the natural fire regime. Relations between faunal structure and fire regime followed patterns expected if faunas were adapted to fire regimes....

This paper examines the effect wildfire mitigation has on broad-scale wildfire behavior. Each year, hundreds of million of dollars are spent on fire suppression and fuels management applications, yet little is known, quantitatively, of the returns to...

Fire Management Today and its predecessors collectively have a 70-year record of publishing on all aspects of wildland fire management. While early on the emphasis was placed on subjects related to fire protection and fire suppression, it wasn't...

Modern forestry has changed the fire dynamics in the boreal forest, and as a result the size and number of deciduous forest patches have been reduced as well as the number of deciduous trees within coniferous forests. This has exaggerated the...

Burn severity strongly influences post-fire vegetation succession, soil erosion, and wildlife populations in the fire-adapted boreal forest and tundra ecosystems of Alaska. Therefore, satellite-derived maps of burn severity in the remote Alaskan...

The mapping of Canadian fires is a large effort supported by provincial, territorial, and federal agencies. Remote sensing techniques can aid in mapping, especially in remote areas and during busy fire seasons. The SPOT-VEGETATION (SPOT-VGT) sensor has...

Dendrochronological methods were used to reconstruct the history of fires and radial increment in trunk growth in pine [Pinus spp. in natural forests] from the region between the Kasa and Dubchesa rivers (59 degrees -61 degrees N). The data obtained...
