Hedden calls painting a “solitary occupation,” but noted in contributed biographical information for this project that “putting brush to canvas however is just one part of the process.”

She said the field trips offered a “structured look at many issues associated with forest fires in Alaska” and revealed her interest in the positive and negative ecological ramifications of forest fires.

For “The Art of Fire” project she has focused on two approaches: one using small abstract mixed media collages with painted Japanese papers to depict burned trees; and a series of still life paintings in oil using objects associated with fires such as maps used by the Alaska Fire Service.
