Integrating Drought Science and Information with Wildfire Management in Northern Nevada and the Sierras

Dec 7, 2017 9:30 am - 4:00 pm
Desert Research Institute - 2215 Raggio Parkway, Reno NV 89523

The WRCC and the Nevada Rx Fire Alliance will be holding a one-day workshop on Integrating Drought Science and Information with Wildfire Management-Northern Nevada and the Sierras, and an Alliance planning meeting. The drought portion of this workshop (sponsored by the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS)) will focus on identifying and discussing key topics related to drought and wildfire impacts for the Region, how communication between drought and wildfire communities can be facilitated, and next steps in increasing the utilization of drought information in fire management planning and activities. We are inviting wildland fire planners, managers, ecologists, behavior and weather experts from Northern Nevada and the Sierras for an interactive, participant-based one-day workshop (with no formal PowerPoint presentations) to begin a discourse on several key questions such as:

  • What is drought and what does it mean for fuel management? Fire behavior? Ecosystem responses? Fire prediction?
  • How can drought information inform fire management?
  • What are the communication opportunities and challenges in exchanging information between drought and fire communities

In addition, we will also use a portion of the day for planning upcoming events for the NV Rx Fire Alliance in 2018.
