Conard Environmental Research Area - 11203 S 12th Ave E, Kellogg, IA 50135

Explore Long-term Fire Research at Grinnell College with the Prairie Reconstruction Initiative and Tallgrass Prairie and Oak Savanna Fire Science Consortium.

You will tour two sets of experimental plots established in 1997-99 at Grinnell College's Conard Environmental Research Area. This 365-acre field station is used for student and faculty research. The site is conveniently-located just off Interstate 80 near Kellogg, Iowa.

Two experimental arrays were established in existing planted prairies:
  • Seasonal burn array comparing spring, summer, and fall burning:
    • Spring and fall plots are burned annually, with summer plots burned every other year to allow fuels to accumulate.
  • Burning and mowing includes four treatments:
    • No disturbance (control)
    • Burn only
    • Mow only
    • Burn and Mow
This field day is organized in partnership with Grinnell College and the Prairie Reconstruction Initiative Advisory Team. Plan for a day organized around learning about research conducted on the site as well as from other practitioners.
