Effective Communication for Smoke Management
in a Changing Air Quality Environment
2008-2009 Workshops

Continually changing air quality regulations will impact managers' abilities to use fire as a management tool. States and local agencies that regulate wildland fire will be developing new rules and policies whether or not wildland fire managers are at the table. These challenges can be addressed when fire managers are knowledgeable of the impact of their emissions, and can participate effectively with the public and air regulatory agencies in the development of smoke management approaches to air quality regulations.

These presentations were given in 2008 and 2009 as part of a series of workshops entitled "Effective Communication for Smoke Management in a Changing Air Quality Environment." These workshops were organized by the NWCG Smoke Committee, coordinated by the University of Idaho, and featured presentations from several federal, state, and other subject matter experts. These presentations are directed at fire managers responsible for communicating and negotiating with state and local air quality regulators. Presentations are organized into three subject areas:

Air Quality and Smoke Management Basics
Perspectives in Smoke Management and Air Quality
Smoke Management Approaches
